SAN JOSE — The San Jose State Spartans are looking to accomplish something Saturday night in Los Angeles the football program has never done: beat USC.The Trojans have made light work of SJSU five times since the teams first met 28 years ago, but the current Spartans are determined to finally break through and upset No. 6 USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.“We always want to face the best,” said SJSU linebacker Bryan Parham. “This is just another opportunity for us to showcase our skills. I always looked at my opportunities as golden, so we’re gonna be prepared and we’re gonna be ready.”The teams first met in 1995 when the No. 7 Trojans, led by eventual first-overall draft pick Keyshawn Johnson, blew out SJSU 45-7. The only time the series was more lopsided was in 2009, when the Trojans rushed for 342 yards in a 56-3 blowout. The closest game in the series was in 2000, when SJSU took a 24-12 lead into the fourth quarter against the Carson Palmer-led Trojans. Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 15:33:40 GMT

SANTA CLARA – Trey Lance is gone, not long after Jimmy Garoppolo. That leaves the 49ers up to Brock Purdy. Again.Isn’t this actually like last season’s playoff push, other than Lance and Garoppolo are not on the roster anymore, not in the locker room, not in meetings, not in practices, not in the 49ers’ quarterback-centric picture?“It just sort of goes to show you, in the NFL, with the positions and the depth chart, it all can change overnight,” Purdy said Friday night, after the 49ers put to rest both the preseason and the Lance era. “… Yes, it is wild. Sort of like a,’Welcome to the NFL’ kind of thing.”More players will leave to reach the 53-man roster limit by Tuesday at 1 p.m., and they’ll follow a much different exit than Lance, who’s headed to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round draft pick in return. The remaining 49ers are drag racing to Lombardi Trophy Ave., all due respect to the abandoned car on the shoulder (Lance), the absent NFL Defensive Player...

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 15:33:40 GMT

SAN JOSE — Unable to make a dent in the Menlo-Atherton defense in the first-half, Bellarmine asserted itself in the second and held on to beat the Bears, 17-14, to mark the coaching debut of David Diaz-Infante at his alma mater. After a pro playing career that spanned 14 years and included two Super Bowl victories, and six seasons as an NFL assistant, Diaz-Infante was content to spend his self-described “semi-retirement” in his Arizona bubble. When Bellarmine reached out to discuss its coaching vacancy, Diaz-Infante was not interested. But after a month of conversations and contemplation, he changed his mind and returned to the school that was dominant force in football during his playing career on the San Jose campus.“Bellarmine’s meant everything to me,” he said. “Coming back has probably been one of the best things I’ve ever done.”Upon his return, Diaz-Infante discovered that the Bells were not the force they once were, especially in the powerful West Catholic Athletic League.“I th...
