BERLIN (AP) — German police said several officers were injured and dozens of people were detained Saturday during unrest at an Eritrean cultural event in the western city of Giessen.Police said bottles were thrown and smoke bombs were ignited as people tried to tear down barricades around the festival venue.About 1,000 officers, a water cannon and helicopters are deployed in the city, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Frankfurt. Police spokesman Christopher Pfaff urged the public to avoid the center of Giessen while the operation is ongoing.Authorities had tried to ban the festival after similar unrest linked to political differences within the Eritrean community occurred there last year, but a court overturned the order.Tens of thousands have fled Eritrea for Europe, many alleging they were mistreated by the autocratic government of Isaias Afwerki.Source

Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes could go 1-2 in the MLB Draft. Still, the Pirates might throw a curve

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 10:11:57 GMT

LSU outfielder Dylan Crews is, according to Tigers coach Jay Johnson, “the perfectly built baseball player.”Power. Speed. Defense. Smarts. There is little Johnson believes Crews can’t do.“He’s the best college hitter I’ve ever seen,” Johnson said.Such are the riches Johnson and LSU enjoyed this year on the way to the national title that for all of Crews’ singular talent, depending on who you ask Crews might not even be the best major league prospect on his team. Having a pitcher who hits triple digits with alarming regularity and remarkable ease will do that.Paul Skenes spent the last six months lighting radar guns with impressive fastballs, making a compelling case that he’s the most major-league-ready college pitcher since Stephen Strasburg more than a decade ago.Crews and Skenes have been the consensus top two picks for months.Yet the consensus won’t matter when the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the clock Sunday night in Seattle with the firs...

LGBT+ Pride event in Georgia evacuated as far-right protesters storm site

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 10:11:57 GMT

TBILISI — Georgia’s annual LGBT+ Pride event was evacuated by the police on Saturday after hundreds of counter-protesters stormed the site.In a statement, organisers of the festival in the capital of Tbilisi announced that they had been forced to shut down the annual festivities after the authorities failed to maintain the perimeter.“Today’s developments indicate that today’s planned events were pre-coordinated and agreed upon between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the violent group Alt-Info,” Tbilisi Pride said. The interim deputy minister of internal affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, said that “the pride festival was to take place in an open territory” and therefore authorities were “unable to provide protection.”Smoke rose above the site, a field just outside the city, as LGBT+ rainbow flags were burned and right-wing activists danced to traditional Georgian folk music. Attendees had been told to board buses for safety moments before.Reacting to the attacks, the Briti...

Victor Wembanyama scores nine points on shaky San Antonio Spurs debut

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 10:11:57 GMT

(CNN) — Not since LeBron James entered the NBA has there been so much hype surrounding a new prospect and fans finally got the chance to see French sensation Victor Wembanyama in a San Antonio Spurs jersey for the first time. However, it’s fair to say the reality of ‘Wemby’s’ Spurs debut didn’t quite match the expectation as the 19-year-old finished with just nine points on 15.4% shooting in the Spurs’ 76-68 win over the Charlotte Hornets. But there were still flashes of the incredible talent that has already made Wembanyama a household name, in particular with his vision and passing, while there was one incredible block on a three-point attempt by Brandon Miller – the Hornets’ No. 2 overall pick in the draft – that showcased his remarkable defensive potential.Wembanyama acknowledged it was a difficult first night for him but called his debut a “special moment.”“It was really special to wear that jersey for the first time,” Wembanyama said. “It’s rea...

City Councilor Kendra Lara has issued an apology for crashing into a Jamaica Plain home, an incident that has sparked fierce reaction from officials and residents.“We’re all accountable for our actions, and I’m no different, so I offer my sincerest apologies to everyone, especially the people of D6,” Lara said in an open letter attached to a Saturday morning tweet. “As your Councilor, I will continue to steward our collective vision at City Hall and work hard to earn and maintain your trust.”The statement comes more than a week after Lara drove what she calls in her tweet a “friend’s car” into a Centre Street home in Jamaica Plain on June 30. A Boston Police report alleges that the vehicle was unregistered and that Lara’s license was revoked.Authorities filed a 51A child abuse or neglect report with the Department of Children and Families, due to her 7-year-old son, Zaire, not being in a car seat as required, according to the police report.
